The 1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men checklist brought Marvel’s mutants into the premium trading card realm for the first time as a standalone set. Featuring top-notch artwork and high-end (for the time) production, the set is still one of the most popular Marvel trading card sets of all-time.
1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men Checklist Details
At 150 cards, the base set is a big one by comic standards. It follows a similar pattern as the Marvel Universe line that was wrapping up around this time. That translates into a lot of cards profiling individual members of the various X-Men teams as well as those that stood in their way. However, it also means a few smaller subsets as well. Original Team spotlights the earliest X-Men while X-Overs shifts the attention to larger comic events. Finally, Wolverine gets his own spot on the checklist, highlighting his biggest match-ups with both heroes and villains.
Being a part of the Fleer Ultra line is an indicator of quality. While high-end looks a lot different today, in 1994 it meant things like glossy stock and gold foil highlights like found in this set.
Other X-Factors in 1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men
Inserts come in several forms in 1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men, including several that are exclusive to certain pack types and configurations.
The fine art theme continues in Fatal Attractions, a six-card set that uses etched foil to highlight the 1993 crossover event that carried over into several X-books.
Silver X-Overs take the subset from the base and redo them on foil stock. These are among the most valuable 1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men cards.
Team Portrait cards all feature paintings by fantasy legends Greg and Tim Hildebrandt. While each stands on its own, the set goes together to form a nine-card puzzle. The pair had a busy 1994 when it came to trading cards. They also did all of the cards for 1994 Fleer Marvel Masterpieces.
The puzzle theme continues in Team Triptych, albeit on a smaller scale. Only found in WalMart packs, these form separate three-card group shots of the X-Men Blue and Gold squads.
Rounding out what’s available in packs are six X-Men’s Greatest Battles cards, which are exclusive to jumbo packs.
Like several other premium 1990s Marvel trading card sets, there are bonus cards as well too big to fit in packs. Each sealed included a set of five oversized UltraPrints.
