1991 Comic Images X-Force trading cards has all the Rob Liefeld art you can handle. Following in the footsteps of a lot of other comic sets from Comic Images, it’s not an overly complex release. But as far as Marvel trading cards go, there are a couple of notable inclusions on the checklist.
1991 Comic Images X-Force Checklist Details
At 90 cards, X-Force is significantly bigger than a lot Comic Images’ other Marvel sets from just a couple of years earlier. Cards highlight the characters and some of the earliest moments from the team that spun out of another X-Men title, The New Mutants.
With Rob Liefeld writing and drawing the book, his fingerprints are all over this set. With cards taking art from the comics, it’s all his work. Front have a X-stenciled silhouette border that’s in a decidedly early ’90s shades with a tight image inside of it. Backs have more x-flair around the outside and a decent write-up describing what’s going on.
With a new group of characters comes some early trading card appearances. Here, the big one is Deadpool. While his promo card in issues of X-Force #1 pre-date this set, this is the first traditional release that he’s in. The main Deadpool card is #60 where he is named. That said, the fan favorite also has a handful of other appearances on other cards, often with other characters.
1991 Comic Images X-Force is also one of the first places to find Mystique trading cards. She’s also in Comic Images’ 1991 Incredible Hulk set.
Liefeld doesn’t only provide the art for 1991 Comic Images X-Force. He also signed 1,000 autographs. It’s a special card that has artwork on the front and the creator’s signature on the back, which is other blank.
Overall, this isn’t a rare set. Box prices are solid but not out of reach, particularly when you consider the early appearances and signature potential.
