The Victor Wembanyama rookie card hunt is driving the basketball card season. There hasn’t been a hoops prospect with as much hobby hype since Zion Williamson.

By the time the last 2023-24 basketball card set arrives, there will be dozens of Victor Wembanyama rookie cards. On top of those are the various parallels that follow as well as inserts that bring more parallels. Simply put, this isn’t the 1980s. You won’t be able to have every Victor Wembanyama card from his rookie season. On the flip side, collectors will have plenty of options when it comes to both their preferences and budgets.

Where Are the Victor Wembanyama Autograph Cards?

Unless there’s a big change to the basketball card landscape in 2023-24, it’s unlikely you’ll find any Victor Wembanyama autograph cards inside any NBA products. They’re a casualty of exclusives. While Panini holds the exclusive rights to NBA cards, Fanatics has an exclusive autograph deal with the French center.

That doesn’t mean that there aren’t Victor Wembanyama autographs, though. Topps, who is owned by Fanatics, has included him in some of their products and online offerings. These range from online exclusives under the Topps Now banner, university-themed Bowman sets and even Allen & Ginter Baseball. They also did 2023-24 Topps Chrome Basketball, which has several different Wemby autographs. None have NBA logos, though.

The Rated Rookie is one of the most well known subsets in the hobby. Nostalgia and the iconic logo have given these cards a little additional weight given the generous print run and wide availability. Its reception is similar to Hoops in that there’s no shortage of copies out there but prices command a bit of a premium over other similar brands. That’s the power of branding in the hobby. Collectors have their go-to lines at varying price points and this is one for the budget-conscious set.

Wembanyama has several inserts in 2023-24 Donruss Basketball as well. For those hunting for short prints, there’s Night Moves and Animation. Perhaps the most interesting is Next Day. Most of these come autographed. However, the 2023 first overall pick is one of several players who didn’t sign so instead Panini emblazoned the card with a massive “No Autograph” note.

A little bit of foil and not much else. Elite is a long-running brand that goes back nearly 30 years. Pretty much the entire time, foil has been the backdrop — and not the fancy kind. The result has some shine but it’s not nearly as elevated a look as it did back in the 1990s. Parallels, on the other hand, provide plenty of pop.

Wembanyama’s inserts in 2023-24 Elite Basketball offer several types of card technology like etched foil, acetate and lenticular. Spellbound offers ten different cards of the Spurs rookie, one for each letter in Wembanyama’s last name.

If this one seems a little familiar, it’s by design. Donruss Optic is basically a chrome version of Donruss. The layout matches up but Panini did switch out the photos. Instead of candy, why not hand out packs of basketball cards? That’s the concept behind 2023-24 Haunted Hoops. A spin-off of sorts from the main Hoops set, it offers a couple of new Victor Wembanyama cards done with Halloween in mind. So not only do the base cards have things like cobwebs and jack-o-lanterns infused into the design but parallels have things like slime and even candy corn.

Bulk pack bundles are extremely affordable and available widely. The end result is one of the most gimmick-heavy Victor Wembanyama rookies cards but it’s also fun and cheap.

2023-24 Hoops was the first product to offer pack-pulled Victor Wembanyama cards in a Spurs uniform. While that carries some weight early on, more important is that it comes from one of the hobby’s longest running brands. Besides his standard rookie card, the French star has a “Hoops Tribute” subset card in the base set as well.

2023-24 Hoops Premium Stock Basketball is basically Hoops Chrome. The set carries the same design and many of the same inserts. For the Victor Wembanyama rookie card, there is an updated action photo (but it’s the same one as the Halloween-themed Haunted Hoops release), though besides the fresh metallic stock. Some of his inserts also have new shots but many are recycled as well.

This is just the second Hoops Premium Stock release. The last one was back in 2019-20 when Zion Williamson and Ja Morant headlined a major rookie crop. Between the two releases, it almost feels like Premium Stock is a quick tack-on set. It gets more cards out there, but not a lot that’s original or terribly memorable.

On top of that, it was an online-only release, which meant a lot of hobby shops missed out. Like past Black designs, the look is on the slick side, adding some elegance. Wembanyama has just two other inserts in 2023-24 Panini Black Basketball. Both are tough pulls.

Traditionally, Contenders and rookie cards means autographs. That’s the case for a lot of 2023-24 Panini Contenders Basketball but not Wembanyama. That Fanatics-exclusive deal means no signatures here and his base RC is moved in with the product’s veterans. The ticket-inspired design remains along with the many parallel themes.

It’s worth noting that hobby and retail packs have slightly different base cards. Retail uses a more upscale stock with includes patterns running through the background. If you’re busting more affordable retail packs, you’ll find more traditional white borders. The hobby version is the more valuable of the two.

Victor Wembanyama has four different cards in the 2023-24 Court Kings base set. As the card numbers get higher, print runs get smaller. So going by traditional definitions for rookie cards, the first would get the honor. No matter how you label it, #172 is the rarest and most valuable.

None have parallels and each has its own design, each based loosely on a different style of artwork.

Wemby has more than a dozen other inserts in Court Kings including a trio of memorabilia cards. Among the most interesting are First Steps, which focuses on sneakers, and Dressed to Success, which opts for fashion over uniforms.

Mosaic is yet another entry in Panini’s chrome portfolio. It’s not as prestigious as Prizm or high-end like Obsidian or Spectra, but it does serve a purpose due in large part to its reach. This is a set with a generous production run covering both hobby and retail. On top of that, there’s a large checklist that has more than 20 different Wemby cards — before you even get into the many parallels.

Wembanyama has three different cards in the base set. His main player card (#238) is the main rookie card with his NBA Debut and City Edition cards taking secondary importance due to their subset status.

Key inserts for the French superstar in 2023-24 Panini Mosaic include Micro Mosaic, Stained Glass and Razzle Dazzle.

Panini Noir takes the black theme found in Obsidian and Black and spins things further with plays of the worlds of Hollywood and film. Traditionally a super premium release due to large quantities of autographs, Wemby doesn’t have any here. The center still has plenty of high-end cards on the checklist, though. This is another product where two base cards can be considered rookies as they have the same print runs and are both basic player cards. Put the two together and the Spurs logo forms a mini puzzle as well. Both numbered to 99, they’re on the scarce side.

Wembanyama as four more cards in the complex base set. All are subsets that come with metal frames and even small print runs of just 25 copies each.

Obsidian does chrome different. Going for an abstract black look, there’s a lot of contrast compared to more metallic looking releases like Prizm and Select. It’s a little more lavish as well, which fits in with Obsidian’s high-end configuration. Although Wemby does have a trio of memorabilia cards on the checklist, it’s his short printed inserts like Color Blast Black and Vitreous that command some of the strongest values.

The combination seems like it shouldn’t work, but Prizm and Monopoly proved to be popular enough in 2022-23 that it returned for a second season. The product mixes the board game with traditional basketball cards including a variety of pack configurations and a large parallel mix. Joining the usual colors are a variety of Monopoly icons.

Given its retail distribution, there should be no shortage of these Victor Wembanyama rookie cards out there. Like regular Prizm, the challenge comes with the low-numbered parallels. There are also some tough inserts including Money Blast, which is a new spin on the popular Prizm Color Blast.

Foil highlights, big lines and designs and bright colors run throughout the base cards and inserts. As a brand, Recon is still finding its way but the look does have a distinct modern appeal to it.

Looking beyond the base RC, the leader among Wemby’s Recon inserts is Gala. Numbered to just 8 copies and lacking any parallels, it’s one of Wembanyama’s rarest cards, period. Fuzion and Contours are also tough but not nearly to the same extent.

Victor Wembanyama has four different base cards in 2023-24 Panini Select. All use chrome and each has its own design. Concourse (#87) is the most common, which would qualify it for the traditional rookie card label. Courtside (#288) is the rarest and carries the strongest prices. All four cards also come with massive parallel rainbows, one of the hallmarks of Panini’s spin on the Select brand. Colors and styles vary overall, but there is still a lot of overlap.

As far as other 2023-24 Select Victor Wembanyama cards go, Color Wheel and the arcade machine-inspired Starcade are the rare and valuable case hits. However, even many of the more common inserts bring standout designs.

2023-24 Topps Chrome Basketball is notable for several reasons. First, it’s the marquee brand’s first appearance featuring current NBA stars in 15 years. That said, Panini continues to hold the NBA exclusive card license so none of the players are in NBA uniforms and there are no league logos on the cards. However, it is recognized by the NBA Player’s Association so there is partial licensing in place. The over-the-should photograph does a good job of hiding the lack of logos without being too obvious like many other cards in the set.

Believe it or not, this is the first mainstream pro product (excluding collegiate releases) to include Victor Wembanyama autograph cards. These are understandably among the biggest chases in the set. In fact, the one-of-one Topps Chrome Autograph Victor Wembanyama Superfractor had a $1 million bounty placed on it by Blez Sports Cards. Excluding parallels, the Spurs center has three other autograph cards in 2023-24 Topps Chrome.

Looking further down the checklist, Wemby has a large Refractor as well as several inserts, some of which are extremely tough pulls.

A spinoff of 2023-24 Topps Chrome, the Sapphire release was limited as an online-exclusive. It has a much smaller print run and a premium price tag. Sapphire cards are noted for the blue color scheme and background pattern that’s similar to Panini’s Cracked Ice cards and some versions of Topps Atomic Refractors.

Wembanyama has three different autographs in 2023-24 Topps Chrome Sapphire, all of which are similar to Topps Chrome autographs. It’s also worth noting that for all three, Wembanyama appears to only have versions numbered to 50 and fewer.

His two standard inserts, Infinite and Sapphire Selections, are both exclusive to this release.
