Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of the most popular franchises in modern entertainment trading cards. Over the span of more than a dozen sets, mostly from the now-defunct Inkworks, collectors have about 100 different Buffy the Vampire Slayer Autograph cards to chase. Encompassing all of the main characters, as well as lots of guest stars, the list is comprehensive but not overwhelming.
The first Buffy the Vampire Slayer autographs arrived with 1998 Inkworks Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 1. With just four cards, the list was small. They also weren’t a guaranteed box pull. And the lineup? It includes Alyson Hannigan, David Boreanaz and creator Joss Whedon. As Inkworks continued to release seasonal sets over the next few years, they continued to add more and more lead stars. Except one — Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar.
It wasn’t until the Season 6 set that autographs were guaranteed in Inkworks Buffy sets that were based on seasons. By then, the checklists were bigger and, in some ways, watered down a little bit.
By the time the Season 7 arrived, more than 50 actors had Buffy the Vampire Slayer autographs. Gellar still wasn’t one of them, though. All are signed on-card. Inkworks also didn’t repeat signers in their seasonal sets.
Going Beyond the Seasons
Buffy the Vampire Slayer trading cards were some of the most popular in the hobby during the show’s run. As a result, there are several spin-off sets that focus on themes rather than episodes. They also came with more autographs. These use different designs and have some signers that appeared in other sets.
Among these is a set dedicated to Spike. This is the only set to have Buffy the Vampire Slayer autographed costume cards.
Finally, in 2015, Buffy fans got their Sarah Michelle Gellar autographs. Rittenhouse landed the license and made a small factory set, each with one of two different signed cards from the actress. Both the full-bleed and bordered cards are limited to 200 copies each.
