1980 Topps Superman II trading cards continue the partnership between the film franchise and card maker. Although the approach and final product is slightly different, the set still compliments the 1978 Superman The Movie set nicely.
1980 Topps Superman II Checklist Details
The main set has 88 total cards, recapping both the superhero sequel and highlighting its characters.
The top of the checklist has a Kryptonian Crystal Bank Archives subset. This is a fancy name for character cards. Although not the exact same design, the layout and theme are similar to the Star File cards from another 1980 Topps set, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.
From there, the base set delves into key moments and plot points, pitting Superman against Zod and friends, and covering the dynamics between Clark Kent and Lois Lane. To this end, things are standard, lining up with virtually every Topps entertainment release from the 1970s and ’80s.
The design is a simple red border with yellow inner frame. The Superman II logo, card number and caption run along the bottom and that’s really it. That said, the visual flair of the film still make many cards stand out.
Most cards backs are also puzzle pieces. However, there are some meatier ones that add some depth: Character Profile, Movie Star Quotes and Story Summary.
Yellow-bordered stickers land one per pack with 22 different in the set.
Unlike the cards for the franchise’ first Christopher Reeve film, 1980 Topps Superman II has just one series.
In addition to standard 12-card wax packs, 1980 Topps Superman II also has 48-card rack packs.
