Given the series the Clone Wars spun off a few years later, the original Genndy Tartakovsky shorts have kind of been forgotten. At the time they were a big enough deal to spawn a set of trading cards. And while it might be lost now, 2004 Topps Star Wars Clone Wars trading cards were a big deal then as they were the first to offer Star Wars sketch cards.
The 90-card base set highlights the series of stylized short cartoons that came from the creator of Samurai Jack. It’s a look that’s very different from the computer-generated series that started on Cartoon Network and ended on Netflix.
2004 Topps Star Wars Clone Wars doesn’t have any autographs. Rather it’s sketch cards that lead the chase. Already a core part in other areas on non-sport trading cards, this marked the beginning of original art cards in Star Wars set. They’d be a cornerstone for plenty of sets over the next decade and are still used today. Because the Clone Wars sketch cards focus on the series, the appeal is somewhat limited compared to a lot of later sets. The quality of the sketch cards is also lower than the standards people now generally expect.
2004 Topps Star Wars Clone Wars has two additional inset sets. While the look is different and much more glossy, Stickers (ten cards, 1:3 packs) have a bit of a throwback appeal. Ten Battle Motion cards (1:9) use lenticular images to showcase action.
While there are no autographs in packs, cases did come with a pair of signed cards — for 2002 Topps Star Wars Attack of the Clones Widevision. Presumably arriving too late for inclusion in the original set, the cards feature Anthony Phelan (Lama Su) and Jack Thompson (Clieg Lars).
