It’s easy to laugh at 1991 Pro Set Super Stars MusiCards. With the abundance of M.C. Hammer and Vanilla Ice cards on the checklist, it’s obviously from a certain period in time. For long-time card collectors, it’s Pro Set. The print run jokes write themselves. Despite the reminders that tastes in popular music change in a hurry and the lack of any sort of rarity, this is still a release that should be viewed with a bigger lens. It’s actually very strong, not only for its comprehensive checklist but for being one of the few places many iconic acts are found on trading cards.
1991 Pro Set Super Stars MusiCards Checklist Overiew
At 340 cards, the 1991 Pro Set Super Stars MusiCards checklist is massive. It’s actually split between two series with the first 260 cards coming first. Series 2 packs add another 80 new cards as well as some updates to fix some issues.
The artists and bands featured in the set are from all across the music spectrum. Rockers, rappers and several other genres are represented. Basically, if you turned on the radio every Sunday and heard Casey Kasem counting them down, they were part of the set. Madonna, Tom Petty, U2, Janet Jackson and Lenny Kravitz are just some of the names found in the first series. There are also several classic rock acts including The Who, Led Zepplin and John Lennon to kick things off.
Series 2 adds the likes of The Beastie Boys, Stevie Nicks and the faces behind Milli Vanilli.
Put them all together and there’s a strong representation of popular music from the early 1990s, a big chunk of the ’80s and even some from the ’70s.
The design is very much a product of its time. Fronts old in the artist photos with angles lines at the top and bottom. Pinks and greens are among the colors used, matching the color schemes of t-shirts, caps and sneakers that were in fashion at the time. Images are mostly promo shots, which make for some interesting choices.
Backs feature artist bios, listing information about the singers and some of their hits.
Variations
It’s worth nothing that Series 2 packs aren’t strictly the high number cards. First series cards are still included. Among them are several updated variations. Some are barely noticeable like moving logos around. A couple others fix errors.
And then there’s #166, Dread Zeppelin. The uncensored original card shows, how shall we say, a lot of a band member’s midsection. The variation makes his shorts just a long enough to cover up the bits that were poking out.
Being early ’90s Pro Set, there’s a lot of 1991 Super Stars MusiCards out there. A lot. That said, several cards have gained traction as singles in recent years as collectors look to limit their search to favorites and icons. This has led to boxes gaining value. They’re still not overly pricey, but they’re also no longer readily available on dollar tables at card shows.
A separate Super Stars MusiCards set was released by Pro Set in the UK. While there are similarities in designs and subjects, it is an entirely different set with a different checklist. There is some overlap in singers, but there are many that are only in the UK set.
