2008 Rittenhouse Women of Marvel looks to the ladies of the comic universe. It’s a focus that has proven successful among collectors and with manufacturers as they look to replicate the idea in their own way.
Art runs throughout the checklist. This includes the product’s focal chase element, Colored Sketch Cards, which are one per box.
2008 Rittenhouse Women of Marvel Checklist Overview
A total of 81 cards make up the base set. Once you get past the checklist title card that kicks things off, it’s all character-driven with 80 different female heroes and villains. Fronts are full-bleed with the set’s logo being the only thing outside of artwork. Backs have a brief bio along with the character’s first appearance. The artist is also noted.
Nearly 50 artists provide artwork for the sketch cards. At this point in time, colored sketch cards were around but they definitely weren’t the norm. In many products, they really were quick drawings. The promise of having something in full color was an elevated concept then and helped push the medium into more premium territory.
Three additional chase sets are available in 2008 Rittenhouse Women of Marvel packs.
Swimsuit Edition (18 cards, 1:6 packs) bypasses action and heads to the beach instead. All cards show characters in their bathing suits and bikinis.
Adding a little texture to the checklist are nine Embossed inserts (1:12 packs). A tenth card featuring Ms. Marvel and Spider-Woman was also produced but not available in packs. Instead, collectors had to redeem points found on Rittenhouse wrappers through the company’s Rewards program.
Embrace (1:24 packs) is the only place Marvel’s men appear. These ten cards, which are done on foil stock, highlight some of the couples that existed in the Marvel Universe at the time.
2008 Rittenhouse Women of Marvel has a production run of 8,000 boxes.
