2007 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces brought back one of the most popular and revered Marvel trading card brands ever after a break of more than a decade. During that time, lots of changes happened in the industry. Fleer/SkyBox went bankrupt and were bought up by Upper Deck. Trading cards continued to evolve, adding more premium chase elements. And while some of those are on the checklist here, this might have the first time that a Masterpieces set didn’t feel top-of-the-line.
2007 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces Checklist Details
From the beginning, Marvel Masterpieces was always about premium artwork. That’s something that doesn’t change with the 90-card base set. Artists appearing in the base set include several comic veterans like Bill Sienkiewicz, Ryan Ottley, Bob Larkin and Dave Dorman. Fronts have a full-bleed piece of art with the character’s name in foil across the top and the set’s logo anchoring the bottom.
2007 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces differ in one major regard to its predecessors. Not all of the artwork is original here. Pieces come from outside the set including Upper Deck’s Vs. collectible card game. That doesn’t take away from the quality of the art. It’s still extremely well done and the major draw. At the same time, it’s not fresh like the earlier sets.
All base cards have two parallels that combine to land one per pack. Most come with a Fleer Foil card. Besides the foil stock, these have another difference. Base cards have a SkyBox logo on the back. These particular foil cads swap it out for the Fleer crown logo.
Gold parallels, which are 1:6 packs, have gold foil running up both sides of the front.
Sketch Cards and Other Inserts
The big evolution on the 2007 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces checklist is the addition of sketch cards. While they were starting to emerge in the ’90s during the line’s original run, they were extremely limited and only in select products. By 2007, they sketch cards were one of the key drivers in entertainment trading cards. The cards, each of which has an original piece of artwork, land one per box. More than 150 artists contributed to these.
Splash Pages (nine cards, 1:6 packs) has three separate triptych puzzles by Alex Ross, Drew Struzan and Arthur Adams. Ashcan versions, which use black and white roughs, were given out as box and case toppers.
Spider-Man- and X-Men-themed inserts round out the main checklist. Each of these has nine cards and 1:4 pack odds. Foil parallels can also be found with 1:18 odds.
Every pack has one of five Subcasts promo cards. These advertise a line of stylized vinyl figures.
To help advertise the set, Upper Deck produced a nine-card Preview set that was sold at San Diego Comic-Con 2007. Just 1,000 sets were made, each housed in a folder and nine-pocket page.
2007 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces has a production run of 13,000 hobby boxes. Like the original set, each is numbered. Instead of a seal, 2007 boxes have the serial number on the bottom of the box.
