1993 SkyBox Marvel Masterpieces is the sophomore outing for the high-art trading card line. The fantasy-style artwork remains the artwork. However, there is one significant change to the approach. Instead of focusing on the work of just one person like 1992’s debut did with Joe Jusko, the set opens itself up to dozens of artists.
1993 SkyBox Marvel Masterpieces Checklist Details
The base set has 90 cards with everything but the checklist card centering on a different character. Fronts have a painted rendition that bypasses the traditional comic look. That said, with so many artists, there is some variety in the different styles.
Bill Sienkiewicz, George Perez, Jim Steranko, Julie Bell, Dave Dorman and Jusko are just some of the people whose work appears on card fronts. The character’s name and a set banner, both done in colored foil, are the only other things on the front.
Backs have comic illustrations plus brief bios.
The focus of 1993 SkyBox Marvel Masterpieces is clearly on the high-end base set. That said there is one insert set. Spectra-Etch takes a similar route as the Battle Spectra chase set from the first Masterpieces set. All eight cards use etched foil to showcase characters from X-Men 2099. Landing 1:9 packs, they’re not particularly tough to find, even still today.
1993 SkyBox Marvel Masterpieces has the same print run as 1992 — 17,500 20-box cases. That works out to 350,000 boxes. Each case and box does come serial numbered. At the time, it was a sign of rarity. Today, it still is to a certain extent, but it’s also a reminder that there are a lot of cards from the set out there.
