1987 Comic Images Marvel Colossal Conflicts is the second of four sets of trading cards released in a two-year span to dive deep into the comic universe. The follow-up to Marvel Universe, this one gives the villains some of the attention they often crave.
The set has 90 total cards. Every one focuses on a Marvel baddie or team of antagonists. As such, there are plenty of legendary villains like Galactus, Magneto and Doctor Doom. But such a deep list elevates some lesser-known second-tier bad guys like Grey Gargoyle, Dragon Man and Zzzax. Marvel’s version of Hitler also appears, which may come as a bit of a surprise despite playing a key role on the cover of Captain America #1.
The design is similar to the 1987 Marvel Universe set, but not exactly. Fronts have the featured characters inside of an octagon border. Images are full color and include lots of dynamic action shots. Despite being a villains release, they’re not alone. Marvel heroes often appear in battles on the fronts.
Backs are descriptive in nature, highlighting their rivalries as well as vitals like where they’re from and their first appearance. They also note Series 2, although the numbering stands alone from the initial Marvel Universe release.
Each pack of 1987 Comic Images Marvel Colossal Conflicts has four cards plus one sticker from one of the company’s separate Marvel sticker collections. Boxes have 50 packs.
These cards aren’t impossible to find but they are getting pricey. The supply isn’t nearly as plentiful as the Impel Marvel Universe sets that would follow just a couple of years later. But trading cards were in a different place by then, too.
