It was Peter Jackson’s followup to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Expectations were high. And King Kong delivered to a certain extent. It might not have been quite the blockbuster some dressed in fancy suits hoped for, but it was a draw. And it had trading cards. With memorabilia from some of Hollywood’s biggest stars at the time. And yet, there’s not a lot to get excited about with the 2005 Topps King Kong Costume Cards.
Inserted 1:24 hobby packs (one per hobby box), the total checklist has seven cards. However, that encompasses just three characters. Carl Denham (played by Jack Black) and Jack Driscoll (Adrien Brody) are both featured on a pair of cards while Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts) has three.
While not ideal, having just three characters isn’t the end of the world. But the cards have other issues. The biggest is how nondescript they are. Each character’s card uses just one photo on the front, likely due to licensing complications. So the only thing that’s different on the front of each of the Ann Darrow cards is the pattern on the swatch. You have to look to the back of the card to know exactly which costume piece you have.
Although the 2005 Topps King Kong Costume Cards combine to land one per hobby box (they’re not in retail packs), some are more plentiful than others. Jack Driscoll’s tweed jacket and Ann Darrow’s dressing gown are the easiest to pull. On the other end are Ann’s dressing room dress and Carl Denhams’ waistcoat.
