2002 Rittenhouse James Bond 40th Anniversary trading cards is a landmark set for both the franchise and the card maker. It marked the beginning of Rittenhouse’s long run with James Bond trading cards. And while Inkworks introduced some premium elements in a couple of earlier sets, Rittenhouse took things to another level.
The first 19 James Bond movies, all the way up through The World Is Not Enough, are represented in the base set. Each has three different cards. A three-card montage at the start of the checklist brings the final tally to 60 cards.
2002 Rittenhouse James Bond 40th Anniversary Autographs
2002 Rittenhouse James Bond 40th Anniversary marks the first time in franchise history that autographs came as a box guarantee. And it isn’t just one. Two signed cards came in every box, a clear signal of a changing hobby at the time.
In this set George Lazenby became the first actor to play James Bond to have a certified autograph highlighting the iconic action star. Other key signers include Christopher Lee and Richard Kiel. Patrick Macnee, probably best known for his role in The Avengers (the British television show), wasn’t in packs. Rather, he was distributed as a case topper.
The 40th Anniversary autograph design carried on to other Rittenhouse James Bond trading card sets for years afterward.
Additional Inserts
Two From the Archives costume cards are also randomly inserted. And the names attached to them are some of the biggest in James Bond history, Sean Connery and Christopher Walken. A third costume card, this one with Macnee, comes with the set’s binder.
Other inserts focus largely on groups of characters. Bond Women and Bond Villains both highlight some of the most recognizable faces in franchise history. Bond Women use a distinct die-cut design while Bond Villains cards are done with foil.
