1993 Topps The Maxx takes Sam Keith’s comic and moves it over to trading cards. It might not be the biggest title, but it was one of the ones at the forefront for a time during Image Comics’ rise. It was also an era when Topps was looking at comic properties landing outside of the juggernauts of Marvel and DC.
1993 Topps The Maxx Checklist Details
When it comes to subject matter, the 90-card base set looks at the characters and lore of the comic. Really, though, this is a set that’s mostly about Keith’s bold art style. While many pieces come direct from the books, the creator did some original art as well.
Fronts have full-bleed images with only the comic’s logo and a thin stripe going up the side and bottom. Backs offer write-ups that explain key elements.
Four Etched Foil cards are the main inserts. But even then, with two per box, they weren’t overly tough. Complicating things a little is a fifth Etched Foil card that was available through redemption. Then, instead of a traditional promo cards, a final insert was included with an issue of Wizard magazine.
The only other inserts are Sam Keith autographs. These were also redemptions. Signatures come on base cards.
Today, 1993 Topps The Maxx caters to a pretty specialized audience. The comic was popular during its era but has largely disappeared. It’s also a moderately tough product to come across today.
