Batman’s got Robin, Don Cherry had Blue, Jarred the Subway Guy had a sandwich. Great men have sidekicks. Not only do they act as a lackey and helper, but their inferiority make their masters’ greatness appear to be even bigger.
Let’s go to one of pop culture’s greatest heroes of the ’80s — Ferris Bueller.
Sure, Ferris is smart, charming and can program a keyboard to make puking sounds, but if it weren’t for his best friend and sidekick, Cameron Frye, he never would have had the ultimate day off. It was Cameron who’s impersonations got Simone out of class, it was Cameron who served up his dad’s car for their jaunt around Chicago, it was Cameron who ultimately made things happen.
I rank Ferris Bueller as one of my all-time favorite films, so you can imagine my excitement when I landed this:
It’s Cameron’s autograph! Or rather it’s the signature of Alan Ruck, the actor who played Cameron. Apparently he was in a Star Trek movie. I don’t watch them very often so his character here doesn’t cause much excitement. This is the second time Ruck has signed for a Star Trek set. He also signed for SkyBox’s Star Trek: Cinema 2000 set a decade ago.
Bueller, on the other hand, has signed only once, for Upper Deck’s Tale of Despereaux.
Sticker – strike one. Unrecognizable cartoon character – strike two. From a set that would have been forgotten if anyone knew it actually existed – yer out. Once again it’s the sidekick who reigns supreme.
