2024 SkyBox Marvel Masterpieces ’92 Platinum reimagines the landmark original release. In a lot of ways, it’s a reprint. In others it shows just how much the hobby has changed and evolved in the last three decades.
Now done in chromium, it also means the familiar cards and art now have dozens of different versions, creating a modern trading card rainbow.
2024 SkyBox Marvel Masterpieces ’92 Platinum Checklist Details
The 100-card base set is almost the same of the 1992 release that launched the mighty Masterpieces line. Marvel heroes and villains are portrayed in a life-like fantasy paintings by modern master Joe Jusko. To be clear, there is not much in the way of new art here. It’s the presentation that’s different.
A few cards from the base set have been dropped and replaced by Lost Marvel cards that were included in the 1992 Marvel Masterpieces factory set.
Instead of premium glossy stock, cards are now chrome. This gives them a metallic shine and feel. It’s also a gateway to parallels and lots of them.
All 100 cards have more than 20 different versions. Some are relatively common while others have just one copy each.
The 2024 SkyBox Marvel Masterpieces ’92 Platinum rainbow starts with several color-based parallels, some of which also have background patterns for even more flash. These mimic other Upper Deck sets released under the Platinum banner:

After all these, the same 100 cards get Variant Cover versions. These add comic cover elements as though the art was used for actual books. Variant Covers have nine additional levels of parallels that match up with the base set’s chromium rainbow, albeit with smaller print runs.
Additional 2024 SkyBox Marvel Masterpieces ’92 Platinum Inserts
The checklist has a couple of other insert sets.
For starters, there’s Battle Spectrum, a chrome take on the original set’s Battle Spectra chase cards. These pair up two iconic characters as they duke it out fantasy style. Standard versions are fairly tough at 1:40 hobby packs. Rainbow parallels are scarce at 1:320 packs.
Rounding things out are Corner Box Creations (1:7 hobby packs) and Fantastic Covers (1:13 hobby packs), which convert famous covers into chromium trading cards. Like Battle Spectrum, both have Rainbow parallels as well.
