Comic cards and baseball cards collide in 2023 Fleer Throwbacks ’89 Marvel Edition. The release, which is exclusive to Upper Deck’s e-Pack platform, takes designs from a very familiar 1980s release and gives them the Marvel treatment. The result is a distinctly retro vibe but one that’s fresh as well given the subject matter twist.
2023 Fleer Throwbacks ’89 Marvel Edition Checklist Details
The base set has just 30 cards, all of which revolve around different Marvel characters. The layout is the one used for the flagship 1989 Fleer Baseball set, notorious for its Bill Ripken bat knob and remembered fondly for having a Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card.
The main base set doesn’t actually have physical cards, though. It’s only digital. However, all other parts of the checklist have actual cards. And digital cards can be combined to create physical cards. These start with Glossy Gold parallels. Those who collect ten copies of the same digital base card can redeem them for one of the physical cards. Ten Glossy Gold parallels can also be combined through e-Pack for a Glossy Black card.
Other parallels available in packs include Red (1:2 packs), Orange (#’ed/489), Yellow (#’ed/289), Green (#’ed/89), Blue (#’ed/25), and Purple (#’ed/5).
Other inserts also channel all things 1989 Fleer Baseball.
For the Record (ten cards, 1:28 packs) are inspired by the one-per-rack pack set. Exciting Stars (ten cards, 1:7 packs), Super Heroes of Marvel (ten cards, 1:10 packs) and Super Stars (ten cards, 1:14 packs) all have roots in baseball card box sets put out by Fleer in 1989.
Sketch cards are available, but extremely tough at 1:995 packs.
The 2023 Fleer Throwbacks ’89 Marvel Edition checklist also has special Achievement cards for collectors who complete the many aspects of the release. These aren’t available in packs.
