When Topps originally announced its 2014 Archives Baseball release, it came with plans for an insert set based on The Warriors, the 1979 cult classic that was celebrating its 35th anniversary. However, when the baseball cards came out, the inserts were not part of the final checklist. No reason was given but The Warriors‘ chance as trading cards appeared to be dashed. Or so it seemed. A few months later, 2015 Topps The Warriors trading cards arrived, although different from originally advertised.
Now the cards were packaged as a standalone product, a 17-card set sold exclusively on the Topps website starting in January. Each set originally cost $19.99. They weren’t traditional trading cards, either. Instead they were blown up to 5″ by 7″ jumbo cards.
The size might be different but the cards still aim to evoke something retro beyond just the movie title. Cards come printed on clay stock, somewhat similar to what Topps uses for their Heritage Baseball sets.
Unlike a lot of Topps’ more recent online-exclusives, The Warriors wasn’t a print-on-demand release. Rather, it was available until it eventually sold through. A specific print run for the set is not known. Whatever the number, it’s extremely tough to find today. Sets and singles pop up on occasion, but usually with high asking prices.
