2013 Rittenhouse Spider-Man Original Animated Series is a quirky set for a quirky cartoon. Done as a limited edition mini release, the product feels more like an insert set and a couple of extras than a standalone release.
The main set consists of just nine cards based on the classic 1967 show, the first to focus on Marvel’s wall crawler. That said, all use lenticular stock, adding some animation to the cartoon-based set. When you tilt the cards, they cycle through small bursts. It’s similar to what Rittenhouse has done several times including wider releases for James Bond and Star Trek as well as inserts for other franchises.
Packaged together with each set was an autograph card from Paul Soles, the voice of Peter Parker and Spider-Man in the show. Soles has two different autographs, one showing Parker and one for the iconic superhero.
Just 500 sets were produced. With the autographs available in equal numbers, that means 250 copies of each exist.
When it comes to Spider-Man trading cards, this is a release that is somewhat overlooked. Part of that is the limited nature and lack of chase. But it was also the initial price tag of $100 per set, which could be considered high given the small number of cards. Soles might have an extensive resumé that includes dozens of voice acting roles, but he’s not a major name.
