Parks and Recreation might seem like an odd choice for trading cards. And it might be. But as it turns out, sometimes going with the less obvious choice results in something with lasting appeal. 2013 Press Pass Parks and Recreation is a rare release that’s a hit with the show’s fans and there’s enough strong content to open it up to a broader audience.
2013 Press Pass Parks and Recreation Checklist Details
The 90-card base set covers the show’s first four seasons. The bulk of that is dedicated to acting as an episode guide with each one summarized with a single card. These are extremely visually driven with four small images on the front and two more on the back. The layout is busy but the boxy layout mimics the show’s opening credits. So don’t be surprised if you find yourself humming along as you flip through them.
Besides the screen grabs, backs also have a written summary of the featured episode.
Eleven character cards follow. Naming both the actor and who they play, these have the potential to reach a broader audience. For example, some collectors might not be fans of the show but if they’re into Marvel movies, there’s a good chance that Chris Pratt’s first solo trading card will grab their attention. Parks and Recreation has a strong cast that also includes Amy Poehler, Rob Lowe, Nick Offerman, Rashida Jones and Aubrey Plaza, among others.
Rounding out the base set are 11 Website cards that have sites connected to the show.
All 90 base cards have Foil parallels. These land one per pack.
Parks and Recreation Autographs and Memorabilia Cards
The only other inserts on the 2013 Press Pass Parks and Recreation checklist are autographs and memorabilia cards.
Autographs are two per box. While the list of signers isn’t huge, it draws heavily on the main cast as well as touching on some notable guest stars. In short, this is one of the strongest single-set autograph lineups ever in this regard. Poehler, Lowe, Offerman, Plaza, and Aziz Ansari all have autographs.
Parker Posey and Fred Armisen are among the guest stars to sign. There’s also Paul Rudd. Already a star at the time, he’s since gone on to raise his profile higher starring as Marvel’s Ant-Man.
Autographs take on a few forms. While all use the same layout, there are additional Gold and Red parallels that come with serial numbers. There are also several inscriptions that have added quotes or character names. Putting together a master set of all these versions is unlikely to happen but they do offer some different ways to chase them.
Relics use swatches of costumes from the show. Like autographs, these have a few forms. Single-swatch versions have Gold and Blue Holo parallels. Both of these colors are also used for a small number of Dual and Triple Relics.
When 2013 Press Pass Parks and Recreation trading cards first released, the set was largely overlooked. However, in the years since the autographs in particular have taken off, a testament to not just the set’s strength but the show’s enduring popularity even though its original run came to an end in 2015.
