2012 Cryptozoic Walking Dead Season 2 trading cards take all the elements that made the first release a modern classic and even improve on some of them. It includes a deep checklist headlined by a stellar mix of autographs. Sketch cards and costume cards both return as well.
2012 Cryptozoic Walking Dead Season 2 Checklist Details
The 80-card base set is dedicated entirely to the show itself. Images come from episodes, leaving posed promo shots out. In a simple approach to design, Cryptozoic doesn’t simply take what’s on the screen and put it on a card. There are instances where cropping is done to make the card stronger.
While the set as a whole works as a recap, it doesn’t label cards by episode. Rather, it treats the set as one longer story, similar to a movie set.
Autographs and Memorabilia Cards
The Walking Dead has inspired a lot of trading card sets, virtually all of which feature autographs. But of all the releases, Season 2 may be the strongest in that department. Nearly all of the 14 signers represent key characters. This includes Andrew Lincoln who played the show’s central lead, Carl Grimes. Lincoln did not sign for season one.
Other signers include Norman Reedus (Daryl), Melissa McBride (Carol), Steven Yeun (Glenn), Lauren Cohan (Maggie) and Sarah Wayne Callies (Lori).
Season 2 also fills a couple of gaps from the first release’s autograph checklist. Two cards signed by Laurie Holden (Andrea) use the original design and are numbered A3 and A4.
Autographs are one per hobby box, standard for Cryptozoic’s Walking Dead releases.
Boxes also have a pair of memorabilia cards, typically one from a cast member and one featuring clothing worn by one of the show’s Walkers. In all the 2012 Cryptozoic Walking Dead Season 2 checklist has more than 30 Wardrobe cards including one Walker card that’s exclusive to the set’s binder.
Three Dual Wardrobe cards are also available.
More Inserts
Sketch Cards are once again extremely tough pulls, albeit extremely popular and often valuable. All use premium artwork that’s either extremely detailed, in full color or, usually, both.
Walker Shadowbox cards are approximately one per box. The premium inserts use a layered approach to showcase one of the show’s zombies.
Character Bios and a puzzle round out the set. Both have nine cards and 1:12 pack odds.
