2011 Upper Deck Marvel Beginnings Holograms are a throwback of sorts. When Marvel trading cards took off in the early 1990s, holograms became an integral part of the chase. For several years, they seemed to be in every set. But as cool as they were, collectors appear to have gotten burnt out by them and rising costs made them more expensive to make in a shrinking market. By the time 2000 rolled around, holograms had pretty much disappeared.
That’s what makes this set a lot of fun, although its rarity and large checklist can make building the set a challenge.
Holograms are inserted 1:72 packs. That translates into one in every third box. A total of 42 cards make up the set, which focuses solely on classic villains.
Upper Deck stuck with the hologram theme for their next two Marvel Beginnings releases. The X-Men were the focus of Series II and the Avengers in Series III.
