2009 Topps Star Wars Galaxy Series 4 came about 14 years after Series 3. A lot changed in that time, in both the worlds of collecting and Star Wars. And while this influenced the end result, the focus on art is still very much at the forefront.
2009 Topps Star Wars Galaxy Series 4 Checklist Details
The base set comes with 120 cards, 30 more than the low of Series 3. With the prequel trilogy to draw from, there are a lot more characters in the mix. The first 18 cards are straight-up character cards all done by Jerry Vanderstelt (#1-9) and Steve Chorney (#10-18). Like the original sets of Star Wars Galaxy cards, much of the artwork comes from merchandise, promotional materials, video games and comics. The New Visions subset offers all-new artwork.
Reflecting the modern hobby, 2009 Star Wars Galaxy 4 has Printing Plate parallels. Each base card has one for each of the four colors of the printing process: magenta, cyan, yellow and black. Each card is considered a one-of-one.
Sketch Cards
The big draw on the insert front is sketch cards. These all have original artwork drawn directly on the card. The list of artists working on the product is deep, which means a lot of variety. Sketch cards aren’t exclusive to hobby packs, either. Retail packs have them, albeit at 1:48 odds.
In addition to the regular sketches are Shaped Sketch Cards. Generally speaking, these have more abstract, urban-style artwork.
Other Inserts
Buyback Autographs go back 15 years to Star Wars Galaxy Series 2. These feature artist signatures who worked on the product. Series 4 is noted on the back to differentiate them from those that were actually sent to collectors when Series 2 came out.
A Star Wars Galaxy tradition is Etched Foil inserts. That continued with 2009 Topps Star Wars Galaxy Series 4. This time around it’s a six-card puzzle with art from Joe Corroney. The original artwork for all six cards were also inserted in packs.
Lost Galaxy is a five-card set that features art originally intended for the 1990s sets but for whatever reason didn’t end up on the final checklists. There’s also a sixth card in the series dedicated to the cancelled Series 2 Yoda promo card. This one is numbered to 999. It also has an autographed version that’s signed by artist John Rheaume.
Six Galaxy Evolutions inserts can only be found in retail packs.
Russell Walks produced a 15-card foil set featuring different characters. Basic fronts have a silver finish. Parallels are in Bronze (1:24 packs), Gold (1:47, /500) and one-of-one Refractors (1:17,664).
