2009 Rittenhouse X-Men Archives delves into the characters and history of Marvel’s mutants. It’s also an early set to take sketch cards beyond their black and white roots on a guaranteed basis. Every hobby box has a full-color piece of original artwork.
2009 Rittenhouse X-Men Archives Checklist Details
Other than the set’s title card and checklist that bookend things, the 72-card base set is all about characters. Seventy different characters are showcased with modern art. Dozens of artists are featured making for a lot of styles.
Fronts are kept simple with just the dramatic art and the X-Men logo. Backs repeat the image inside of an X-Men icon. The character’s name and the artist are both mentioned. However, there’s no additional info on the character like a bio or even a note on their first appearance.
Over 80 artists contributed sketch cards to the set. That said, not all were available in packs. Three were reserved for the set’s multi-case incentives. Those ordering three cases received a card drawn by Andy Price. For six cases it was either a Renae De Liz or Tom Palmer card.

Legendary Heroes uses foil to spotlight different characters. Nine are available in packs at a rate of approximately one per hobby box. A tenth card featuring Shadow Cat was exclusive to the Rittenhouse Rewards program. To get it, collectors would have to redeem points found on Rittenhouse wrappers.
Ready for Action (1:12 packs) has artwork from nine covers while nine iconic X-Men villains are highlighted in Nemesis (1:8 packs).
