2008 Topps Star Wars: The Clone Wars is the first set of trading cards based on the television series — well, its origins, which just so happened to get a big screen launch. At the time it first came out, the release didn’t exactly set the world of Star Wars trading cards on fire. However, in the time since, it has become one of the most valuable releases outside of modern high-end products like Masterwork and Stellar Signatures.
2008 Topps Star Wars: The Clone Wars Checklist Details
The 90-card base set covers the feature film that acted as the premiere for the full Clone Wars television series. While there’s a lot of overlap in characters to the earlier collection of shorts from Genndy Tartakovsky (which also got a set of trading cards), this is much broader in scope and would run for several seasons.
The base set is notable for having the first Ahsoka Tano card. Her appearance in the character subset at the start of the checklist is one that commands a significant premium over regular story cards. Captain Rex is another notable trading card debut.
The base set has Foil parallels. Exclusive to hobby and landing approximately one per box, each is serial numbered to 205 copies.
Sketch Cards and Inserts
Headlining the inserts are Sketch Cards, which are also a hobby box hit. More than 100 artists contributed to the set including some of the show’s artists. These are noted on the front as part of the design. Dave Filoni, one of the most important figures in the franchise’s television era, contributed a small number of art cards as well. It’s worth noting that most of these truly are “sketch” cards — quick drawings that lack the color and intricate detail found on a lot of similar cards today.
Among the other inserts are ten Animation Cels, which are 1:6 packs. Five Blue Animation Cels are only in Walmart and Meijer packs while five different Red cards are exclusive to Target.
Ten Foil inserts and five lenticular Motion Cards are also retail-only. It’s the same with Coins, which are two per blaster. Going further down the Coins rabbit hole are Purple and Yellow parallels that are exclusive to Walmart and Toys ‘R’ Us blasters respectively.
2008 Topps Star Wars: The Clone Wars is one of the franchise’s rarer sets from the period. The many exclusives make some parts, particularly the store-only cards, extremely touch to find today. This has led to strong values across the board for virtually everything on the checklist.
A Widevision set followed in 2009 looking at The Clone Wars‘ first season.
