Heroes seemed like the perfect show to bring over to trading cards. Heck, during it’s first season, Heroes seemed like the perfect show to sell just about anything. And 2008 Topps Heroes trading cards do a good job of capturing the show while mixing in three types of premium inserts. But there’s not much else beyond that.
The base set has 90 cards. Sticking with the massive cast, nearly the first third is dedicated entirely to character bios. From there, the first season is recapped. It’s rounded out with subsets dedicated to Tim Sale’s comic art, the show’s special effects and a couple of season two preview cards.
Autographs, Memorabilia Cards and Sketch Cards
Hobby boxes for the first set of Heroes trading cards come with the promise of either an autograph, memorabilia or sketch card.
The autograph checklist is very strong. It has nearly all of the central stars including Hayden Panettiere (Claire, aka The Cheerleader), Masi Oka (Hiro) and Milo Ventimiglia (Peter). Inserted 1:135 hobby packs, they’re the hardest of the hits to pull. Like virtually all Topps entertainment sets from the time, they all use stickers to hold the signatures.
2008 Topps Heroes has five different memorabilia cards. Inserted 1:44 hobby packs, each has a swatch from a show-worn costume. The most popular is the card with a patch from Claire’s cheerleading outfit.
Today, sketch cards are usually more than just quick doodles. That wasn’t the case back in 2008. The sketch cards here have a broad range of quality. While some are done with great detail and in full color, others really are sketches. It is worth noting that Topps got Tim Sale, the show’s artist, to draw a handful of cards.
Additional 2008 Topps Heroes Inserts
2008 Topps Heroes has just two other inserts. Foil Cards are the easiest to pull, landing 1:3 packs for both hobby and retail. Lenticular Motion cards are retail-exclusives and can be tricky to find now.
When this set was released, it was very popular. Key autographs and high-end sketch cards were fetching hundreds of dollars. But then Heroes lost a lot of its steam in a hurry. As a result, interest diminished. Some of the autographs, particularly Panettiere, and other high-end cards still command strong prices but not at the same levels they once did.
