2007 Topps Star Wars 30th Anniversary trading cards didn’t really break any new ground or offer any innovations. However, its depth and scope make it one of the finest sets of Star Wars cards ever.
2007 Topps Star Wars 30th Anniversary Checklist Details
The 120-card base set covers all six films. And then it keeps going to the various spinoffs like the Ewoks and Droids cartoons and Ewoks movies. Even the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special gets a little love. For Muppet lovers Mark Hamill’s appearance on The Muppet Show is also featured on a card.
In addition to the larger-than-average checklist, 2007 Topps Star Wars 30th Anniversary has three levels of parallels. Blue are the most common, landing 1:12 packs. Red Foil are one per hobby box. And then there’s Gold, the toughest of them all. Inserted about 1:12 boxes, each has just 30 numbered copies. Rare parallels today don’t have quite the same demand because they’re included so frequently. However, it wasn’t the case in 2007 for Star Wars sets. As a result, Gold cards still command strong interest and prices.
Autographs
Every 2007 Topps Star Wars 30th Anniversary hobby box has either an autograph or sketch card.
Autographs are a little more common, falling 1:43 packs. The checklist is stellar with many key names like Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels and David Prowse. Oh, yeah — this is the first set of Star Wars trading cards to include Harrison Ford autographs. Rumored to have just ten copies, the card originally sold for as much as $10,000. Ford has signed for several more products since then so it’d be tough to expect the same levels. However, it’s still a milestone card for the franchise and entertainment trading cards as a whole.
A good number of signers come from behind the camera. Normally, these sorts of cards are frowned upon by collectors who would rather have the faces they recognize. But Star Wars is different, especially given the fact that this product was a special event. Many are model builders and effects artists responsible for bringing the movie to life. There’s also legendary composer John Williams and producer Gary Kurtz.
Additional Inserts
Like all sets, sketch cards (1:50 hobby packs) feature a variety of styles. Some are detailed, others less so. Because not all are in color, those that are generally command a premium.
The most common of the basic inserts in 2007 Topps Star Wars 30th Anniversary are the Triptych. These form a variety of three-card collages based around a singular theme.
Retail packs might not have the same level of autographs and sketch cards but they do have some exclusive inserts that aren’t easy to find today. These include Animation Cels, Magnets and a trio of blister pack Bonus Cards.
Hobby boxes came with a foil-stamped buyback card from the original 1977 Topps Star Wars cards. Some sets like the blue- and red-border series appear to be more common. These were very popular with set builders, especially when you consider that these were essentially a bonus add-in.
