2007 Inkworks Golden Compass trading cards was another one of those teen lit franchises that failed to translate from the page to blockbuster to the hobby.
As far as trading cards go, I’m sure it seemed like a foolproof proposition for Inkworks, at least in theory. It had a lot of hype. It was guaranteed to be beautiful. And the cast was about as strong as one could hope for.
But there was only one problem. The movie came out in 2007 when collectors expected autographs in their movie products. Without them for anything but a kiddie movie, it was like a kiss of death. Pucker up.
A big hit can help a weaker set do well. A couple of strong autographs can make a set of a marginal box office draw popular. When you’re missing both, it’s a tough road.
That doesn’t mean that 2007 Inkworks Golden Compass is a product to be ignored. Visually, it’s got a lot going for it. It also broke out of the Inkworks configuration mold a little bit.
2007 Inkworks Golden Compass Overview
The base set has 72 cards. It’s largely characters and story recaps. I couple of subsets at the end dig deeper into the story’s mythology.
Although there are no autographs, 2007 Inkworks Golden Compass trading cards do have Pieceworks costume cards. Inserted one per box, there are 11 in the set. Three of the wardrobe pieces come from Nicole Kidman’s character. Eva Green and Daniel Craig are also included.
As far as basic inserts go, there are four different. Lyra’s World uses a 3-D lenticular style to showcase some of the film’s epic set pieces. Truth Telling also uses lenticular stock, focusing on the alethiometer. Three Daemon Forms cards flip between a human character and the animal they’re connected with. Finally, there’s Fight to the Death, a six-card foil set centering on the bear battle between Iorek and Ragnar.
