Even after the trilogy wrapped up its run in theaters, there was still enough demand for more Middle Earth to warrant a continuation of the card line. 2004 Topps Lord of the Rings Trilogy Chrome captures all three films with the card maker’s distinct chromium take.
From a collectors standpoint, it brings the most of all of the Lord of the Rings trading card sets as far as autograph and memorabilia quantity. Hobby boxes have a pair of autographs plus one relic.
The 2004 Topps Lord of the Rings Trilogy Chrome base set has 100 cards. They’re all of a storytelling variety and lots of new images are used.
For Topps Chrome fans, they’ll likely notice that the Refractors that are common in their sports releases are missing here.
The autograph lineup isn’t as deep as the main movie sets. That doesn’t mean there aren’t some notable names, though. Viggo Mortensen has two different signed cards. Liv Tyler is also included.
Because of the relative ease at which autographs were pulled and the lackluster lineup in comparison to other sets, the signed cards in this set are relatively inexpensive. The dark chromium look is also a departure from the main sets.
Memorabilia cards are the only other inserts in 2004 Topps Lord of the Rings Trilogy Chrome. There are nine different in the set, all of which use the same chromium card stock as the base set.
