Hellboy wasn’t supposed to be overlooked. Sadly, it was. So too are the 2004 Inkworks Hellboy trading cards. Featuring a varied lineup of movie cards, decent autographs and interesting costume cards, it’s a great set for the film’s (apparently few) fans. That said, collectors will have a tough go of it now by opening boxes as all the autographs and Pieceworks cards are redemptions.
The 72-card base set is straightforward. The majority of the checklist consists of character and story cards recapping the movie. There’s also a Behind the Scenes subset. Based on the Dark Horse comic book from Mike Mignola, Hellboy tells the tale of one of Satan’s sons who opts to do good.
2004 Inkworks Hellboy boxes come with both an autograph and a costume card — at least the promise of one. All were issued as IOUs, which became essentially useless when Inkworks went out of business a few years later. This all but kills much of the value of opening a box if you’re chasing one.
The autographs in the set are strong. Lead star Ron Perlman, arguably, the lone essential name for the set is there. So is director Guillermo del Toro and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. Selma Blair is the one big name that’s missing. John Hurt would have been nice as well.
Pieceworks cards all come with a swatch from one of the movie’s costumes. A variety of characters are represented in the 12-card insert set including Hellboy’s leather coat and pants.
2004 Inkworks Hellboy has two additional insert sets available in packs. To Hell and Back (1:11 packs) is a nine-card foil puzzle. Six B.R.P.D. cards (1:17) use embossed foil as their focal point.
Boxes come with one of three box loader cards while cases have an exclusive card as well.
