2002 Topps Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring Update Memorabilia Cards are the first such trading cards for the franchise.
Inserted one per hobby box, the set has eight cards. Each comes with a swatch of fabric used in the making of the first Lord of the Rings live-action film.
It is important to note that the swatches from the cards might not have seen any actual screen time. The wording on the back leaves it open that the actor may not have even worn the swatch, “This card contains genuine material used in the creation of…”
With that, it might be that the swatches are from scraps of material left behind on the fitting room floor.
While all eight of the cards combine to land 1:36 packs, three of them are short prints: Arwen’s Riding Outfit, Bilbo’s Waistcoat and Frodo’s Nightshirt. That said, they’re not overly rare in comparison. They may cost a little more but nothing in the set is wildly pricey.
These are the only inserts in 2002 Topps Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring Update, a set that filled in some of the gaps left in the first set to prevent major spoilers and add late-finishing special effects.
