2001 Topps Star Wars Evolution trading cards are notable for a couple of reasons. The first is that it was the first set to feature images from the following year’s Attack of the Clones. However, the reason this set made a bigger impact was the fact that it was the first Star Wars set to feature actor autographs.
The 90-card base set is all about characters. Printed on foil, the focus of 2001 Topps Star Wars Evolution is looking at how characters changed over the course of the films. Hence the name, Evolution.
Cards are printed on foil card stock with a pair of images on the front.
The simple Evolution A and Evolution B inserts are essentially the same idea, only harder to pull and focused only on the most important characters to the saga.
As for the autographs, they’re inserted one per box. Not only is this the first set with signed cards from the movies’ stars, but the lineup is still one of the more impressive for both its depth and quality. Key signers include Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Anthony Daniels (C-3P0), James Earl Jones (Darth Vader), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Ian McDiarmid (Senator Palpatine). Not all autographs were printed in equal numbers, which adds a premium to some of the already top cards.
The Evolution line would continue five years later and then rebooted in 2016 following the release of The Force Awakens.
