1999 Topps Star Wars Episode 1 Widevision marks the closest thing from going straight to the big screen to big trading cards. Rather than going with traditionally sized cards for the main set to kick off the prequel trilogy, Topps went with the oversized format that was a hit with Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. However, those Widevision sets came out nearly 30 years and several sets after they originally hit theatres.
1999 Topps Star Wars Episode I Widevision Checklist Details
The main base set has 80 cards. While it charts big moments of The Phantom Menace from start to finish, as a standalone release this one doesn’t have the same depth as the original trilogy Widevision sets. However, there are inserts and a separate second series to have fill in some of the gaps.
With cards measuring 2.5″ by 4.5″, they an inch longer than typical modern dimensions. For card fronts, this means what’s shown on the big screen has been preserved. Other than that, though, the base set is fairly standard in its approach with a caption on the front and a brief synopsis on the back. For the original trilogy Widevision sets, there was greater focus on the films’ backgrounds including production notes and artwork. Here, it’s more like what you’d find in a regular set of movie-based trading cards, only bigger.
Inserts
Special Collector’s Edition hobby boxes include 40 additional Expansion cards. These inserts are numbered separately and carry a slightly different design. But the idea is that they fill in some of the gaps from the base set.
Chrome cards are another set of inserts available in hobby packs. There are eight in this set, all done on metallic-looking stock, with one landing every 12 packs.
Ten Mirror Foil cards and 16 Stickers are retail-exclusive inserts. There are also five other Chrome cards that land one per retail tin.
1999 Topps Star Wars Episode I Widevision came out before the franchise’s first autograph cards. Without any major chase elements, the product has remained on the affordable side. Like a lot of Episode I merchandise and collectibles, it’s likely the set was overproduced to some extent as everyone had such high hopes heading into the new films.
The standalone Series 2 release goes a little deeper in Episode I but it too is largely ignored today, largely for the same reasons this one is.
