1999 Inkworks Elvis Presley Platinum Collection is one of the more overlooked sets of trading cards dedicated to The King. That’s not because it’s poorly executed (it’s not). Rather, it’s more that it only tells part of the story of the entertainer’s life and career. Although there have been Elvis Presley cards since that have pushed the boundaries further, Inkworks helped introduced him to a more modern configuration with multiple levels of chase cards and different types of card styles.
1999 Inkworks Elvis Presley Platinum Collection Checklist Details
The focus of the checklist is the 1950s, the early part of Presley’s career. The 90-card base set goes all the way back to his family and upbringing before shifting to his music and rise to fame. Cards offer plenty of insight and draw from a wide variety of image types and styles. Although there had been several sets of Elis Presley trading card by this point, this one not only offered the most depth but was able to add context by looking back and reflecting on the entertainer’s impact and legacy.
Inserts put the spotlight on some of the popular premium printing technologies at the time. Kicking them off is a Gold Foil Signature card that has a facsimile copy of Presley’s signature. Each has hand-numbered out of 1,411 copies.
A Super Platinum Die-Cut card is shaped on the upper edge like a record. Landing approximately 1:3 boxes, the record also uses etched foil to stand out even further.
The intricate foil returns for nine Platinum Smasher Record cards. Each looks at a different Elvis album including its artwork.
Finally, there are six Return to Sender cards die-cut in the shape of a retro postcard.
The set was originally advertised as being “Volume 1,” which would suggest further releases showcasing the evolution of Presley’s career and his emergence as an icon bigger than the music industry.
The likely explanation for no ensuing sets would be slower than expected sales. One piece of evidence of this is the print run of the Gold Foil Signature card, which is numbered to 1,411 copies. That’s significantly less than the promo cards advertising the product mention — 1,956 copies.
