Topps’ run with the WCW license wasn’t long, but when it comes to wrestling autographs, it might be the most impressive ever assembled. And it all began with the 1998 Topps WCW/nWo Autographs.
Featuring the likes of “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan, Eddy Guerrero, Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Giant, Kevin Nash and more, the debut lineup is filled with big names from both the 1980s and 1990s. This is a theme that would carry throughout all of Topps’ releases with the WCW license.
The checklist has a total of 37 signers. Inserted 1:40 hobby packs, there’s no promise that there’s one in every box. It’s worth noting that 1998 Topps WCW/nWo retail boxes do not have autographs. The easiest way to tell between the two is to look at what’s written on the packs and boxes. Hobby lists autographs prominently on each.
For completists, Hogan’s card has sever variations. The “HH” initials seems to be the most common. Among the other versions are signatures on the back and some with shortened versions of his name like “Wood.”
Although many of the top signers have signed in more recent years with WWE releases, the 1998 Topps WCW/nWo Autographs have held up well. A big part of that stems from the significance of the product and the larger line of autographs. Only a handful of certified wrestling autographs existed before this set.
