Most sets of Star Wars trading cards focus on story, characters or broad themes. 1997 Topps Star Wars Vehicles finds its place exploring how people get around in a galaxy far, far away.
1997 Topps Star Wars Vehicles Checklist Details
Spanning 72 cards, the base set has lots of spaceships, war machines and other forms of transportation. Much of it is art-based with illustrations provided by Top Cow’s stable of comic artists. This gives them a distinct look, a style that was common in a lot of comic books at the time. Towards the end of the checklist, there are subsets for the big-time Battles of Yavin, Hoth and Endor. The Millennium Falcon, perhaps the most famous Star Wars vehicle of all, gets four cards. Finally, a handful of profile cards pair up characters with ships and vehicles they’re known for.
1997 Topps Star Wars Vehicles is extremely lean on inserts, both for what collectors can expect in a box and the space they take on the checklist.
Four Cut-Away cards use acetate to show the featured ship. The cover lifts up to show the inside of the ship. These land 1:18 packs.
Each box should also have one of two different 3-D cards. A redemption for an oversized 3-D card, essentially an uncut set of both, is a case hit.
The promo cards are some of the rarest and most valuable 1997 Topps Star Wars Vehicles cards. Originally planned to be done in chromium, similar to 1996 Topps Finest Star Wars, promos #P1 and #P2 use the shiny stock. Both have even scarcer Refractor versions that are believed to have less than 200 copies each. All four of these are extremely tough to find today.
There’s also a two-card oversized promo that is much more common.
Without much in the way of characters, 1997 Topps Star Wars Vehicles is somewhat overlooked today. It’s also one of the tougher sets from the franchise to find in any sort of quantity.
