By the time the late ’90s rolled around, premium sets like Masterpieces and Fleer Ultra were becoming more and more common in the Marvel trading cards realm. While they’re beautiful and top quality, their cost (even before they soared in the decades since) was geared more at advanced collectors — the ones with more to spend. 1997 Fleer/SkyBox Spider-Man .99 is one of those sets that went in the opposite direction.
It’s a simple set. More importantly, it’s one that aimed to have more mass appeal thanks to its allowance friendly price tag of $0.99 per pack.
1997 Fleer/SkyBox Spider-Man .99 Checklist Details
When it comes to standard trading cards, 1997 Fleer/SkyBox Spider-Man .99 is about as basic as it gets. There’s 50 total cards in the base set and that’s it. The checklist has no additional inserts other than Overpower game cards. No parallels, no tough chases with premium artwork and definitely no holograms.
Things break down into four main sections. Spidey and Friends is all about heroes, both the set’s star and some of his more famous friends like Wolverine, Hulk and Iron Man. From there, things shift to Spider-Man’s gallery of rogues with the aptly titled Villains section. That gives way to Battles and, finally, Team-Ups.
Artwork is styled more on the animated series that was winding down its run at the time. Characters are somewhat simplistic, but they’re recognizable. Background art is largely non-existent, instead usually opting for color gradients that even basic Photoshop skills can generate.
With so many standout sets of Marvel trading cards from the mid- to late-1990s, 1997 Fleer/SkyBox Spider-Man .99 is largely lost in the shuffle today. And while it doesn’t carry huge values, its simplistic set-up means that it’s surprisingly hard to find now. Not impossible, but just not as plentiful as the initial cost might suggest.
