Over the years, Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes gang have been largely overlooked when it comes to trading cards. Sure, there have been a few sets over the years but not a lot. 1996 Upper Deck All-Time Toons might be one of the best, diving into the cartoon shorts and offering some premium inserts to go along with them.
1996 Upper Deck All-Time Toons Checklist Details
The 108-card base set is broken down into four subsets. Classic Scenes kicks things off with some of the best and funniest scenes in Looney Tunes history. The next two sections are dedicated to Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. Finally, there’s Dastardly Duos, which look at various rival combinations.
The most noticeable thing about 1996 Upper Deck All-Time Toons is its physical size. Taking a page from 1995 Topps Star Wars Widevision and several others around this period, the cards opt for a tallboy format. This gives them a widescreen feel. However, where others like Star Wars use the 4 1/2″ by 2 1/2″ to maintain the original aspect ratio. Here, some cards take advantage of this but others block things off and provide some additional text. Typical backs have another image plus extensive text based on the short or subset theme.
Joining the main set are a couple of premium-style insert sets.
Classic Ink Cels are designed to look like film cels, complete with clear stock. The 15-card set highlights moments from some of the most memorable Looney Tunes shorts. These land 1:12 packs or approximately three per box.
Toon Time Capsule also has 15 cards, although these are significantly easier pulls at 1:3 packs. Etched foil is the defining feature for these.
1996 Upper Deck All-Time Toons wasn’t the first Looney Tunes set from the card maker. Earlier in the decade, they did several Comic Ball sets, combining characters with famous athletes. While not directly related, Upper Deck revisited Bugs Bunny and the gang with multiple Space Jam releases.
