1996 Topps Independence Day Widevision isn’t the first set of trading cards to have aliens come to violently take over the planet. Mars Attacks had that cover more than 30 years prior. This time, though, the invasion gets the widescreen treatment and a memorable cast led by Will Smith.
1996 Topps Independence Day Widevision Checklist Details
Even with the larger dimensions, 1996 Topps Independence Day Widevision packs a lot of info. The 72-card base set breaks down into a few sections. At the top, there are character cards. But rather than the usual single-person profile, these showcase multiple. From there, it moves into recap mode with separate subsets for each of the three days that happen in the movie. Finally, there’s a generous subset dedicated to production art.
The “Widevision” part of the set comes through with the size. Measuring 2 1/2″ by 4 11/16″, they’re noticeably bigger than traditional trading cards. The idea is that they format lines up with the widescreen presentation shown on the big screen. Following the popularity of 1995 Star Wars Widevision, Topps and other companies rolled with it for a few years.
Holo-Foils are the only inserts. One of six different cards lands every nine packs. This means they’re not too tough or expensive.
