Although several sets of Simpsons trading cards exist, 1996 Tempo Simpsons Down Under is the only one to draw inspiration from a single episode. And it makes sense, too, seeing as how the product was distribution in Australia.
Like previous releases from SkyBox and later ones by Inkworks, there’s a fair bit of creativity on the checklist, not to mention a healthy dose of snark.
1996 Tempo Simpsons Down Under Checklist Details
The base set, which has 100 total cards, is broken down into four general sections. Characters is the first, profiling not only members of the Simpsons family but many Springfield citizens as well. Following that are 45 card dedicated to recapping “Bart Vs. Australia”, the season six episode that saw the Simpsons pay a visit to Australia. Following that is a nine-card puzzle that depicts the show’s characters as zombies, and Tour of Springfield, which spotlights some of the city’s familiar sights.
Inserts
The 1996 Tempo Simpsons Down Under checklist has some great inserts that are also somewhat limited, especially on the secondary market today.
Homer As… sees Bart’s dad do a little cosplay as famous people and characters connected to Australia. These range from Captain Cook to Crocodile Dundee to Mad Max. Landing 1:7 packs, each is also serial numbered to 7,000.
The Seven Duffs is a die-cut set that has seven cards, one for each of the beer mascots. Although these don’t have serial numbers, each card has 3,000 copies with one in every 20 packs.
Four of the most memorable supporting characters on The Simpsons have acetate chase cards in Springfield’s Finest. Falling 1:65 packs, each has a modest print run of 1,750 copies.
The toughest card available in packs is a redemption good for a “Bartarang” — a boomerang decorated Simpsons style. Just 50 were made with one appearing in approximately 1,200 packs.
Rounding out the checklist are six oversized box cards, a pair of equally large case cards and a binder card.
1996 Tempo Simpsons Down Under has a production run of 15,000 boxes or 750 20-box cases.
