From its sheer scale to its epic beauty, Kingdom Come is one of the greatest comic mini-series ever produced. And everyone involved knew that it was going to be something special. So much so, we got 1996 SkyBox Kingdom Come Xtra trading cards. And when it comes to showcasing the breathtaking art of Alex Ross, who’s going to complain?
The entire product is done in an over-sized tallboy format. This means even more Alex Ross art.
The 50-card base set is divided into a couple of sections. The first part recaps the general story. It’s no replacement for the actual comics in this regard, but it does its job. Characters make up the remainder of the set. Some are simply aged icons. Other are entirely new spins.
Artist Alex Ross and writer Mark Waid each signed 40 copies of each base card making for a couple of premium-style parallels. Both are inserted 1:160 packs and are tough to come by today in any quantity.
1996 SkyBox Kingdom Come Xtra has four additional insert sets. None are big or overly complicated, though. Sketchboard cards are inserted one per pack. These highlight early pencil sketches of what would become Ross’ masterpiece.
Classics has just three cards. These commemorate the DC trinity of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman.
Creator Collection is another character-based set. This one has six cards, all of whom are central to the story.
Finally, there’s Unfolded. As the name suggests, these three cards open up and expand to offer a full look at the complete cover art.
