Before autographs, sketch cards and memorabilia took over, holograms were one of the kings of the hobby. A go-to insert for everything from sports to entertainment, holograms offered a unique look and wonderment — especially when they were done right. And 1996 Fleer/SkyBox Batman Holo Series does just that, maybe even a little too much.
The hologram theme runs throughout the product. The base set has 50 cards, which isn’t big but when it’s all shiny holograms done with original artwork, it’s not so bad. The images aren’t just scanned in images done with a cheap hologram shine. Rather, they go the three-dimensional route.
The base set has a pair of parallels. Gold cards are the easiest, falling one per pack. If you’re looking for more of a challenge, Blue parallels are 1:12 packs.
Four HoloAction inserts add a some simple movement. Each has three versions. Silver are the easiest, landing 1:4 packs. Gold are 1:12 packs while Blue are one per box. Given the small checklist for the chase set, none are overly challenging to find.
The 1996 Fleer/SkyBox Batman Holo Series HoloCel (1:36) is a trippy card. Done on acetate, at first glance it looks like a blank piece of plastic. But when you tilt it into the light, a holographic image of Batman appears.
The product rounds out with seven DC Overpower Holograms (1:72) that could be used in the trading card game.
