1996 Fleer Ultra X-Men: Wolverine follows in the upscale footsteps of the 1994 and 1995 Ultra X-Men sets, but with one significant difference. It’s right there in the name, too. This one revolves around the most famous Canadian superhero, Wolverine.
1996 Fleer Ultra X-Men: Wolverine Checklist Details
Consisting of 100 cards, this is another set of 1990s Marvel trading cards that bring fine art to the medium. The checklist is divided into 11 different nine-card subsets. Each of these subsets has a different artist or duo highlight a Wolvie theme. The superstar lineup includes Ken Kelly, Joe Jusko, Julie Bell, Boris Vallejo, Dave Dorman, Mark Texeira and more.
Like other sets under the Fleer Ultra brand, Marvel or otherwise, cards are done with a premium look and feel. Slick glossy stock, gold foil highlights and, of course, the original art are all apparent.
Wolverine is the focal point, but the base set covers a lot of his allies and enemies as well. Most cards are single characters but each subset has at least a couple with multiple.
Adding another wrinkle to the base set are the card backs. Rather than completely informational like had been done in past releases, they go together to form puzzles. Those puzzles then tell an original comic story. There’s still a little bit of bio details, but it’s limited to a small banner on each back.
1996 Fleer Ultra X-Men: Wovlerine has two insert sets.
Nine HoloFlash cards (1:4 packs) keep with the puzzle theme. Using foil stock, Magneto faces off against some of the most famous X-Men. Legends Greg and Tim Hildebrandt provide the art.
Finally, there are three lenticular Mirage cards (1:24 packs). When tilted, these cycle through multiple images. They also rank as the most valuable 1996 Fleer Ultra X-Men: Wolverine cards.
