1995 Topps Star Wars Widevision took the franchise’s trading card line in a new, bigger direction. Built around the concept of portraying everything as it was shown on the screen, it meant different dimensions for the cards themselves. While that has meanr the death of a lot of products, here it actually helped cement a trend in entertainment trading cards.

As far as Star Wars trading cards go, the base set is on the large side with 120 cards. This is especially impressive when it covers just the first film. The was before the Special Editions arrived, so there was no new footage to draw from. But bigger meant better this time around. It also helps to put a twist on some very familiar shots.
1995 Topps Star Wars Widevision cards are done in a tall boy format, measuring 4 7/8″ by 3 3/4″. It’s meant to mimic the experience of seeing A New Hope in a movie theater. Not only are the cards larger, but the images are all full remastered. This means they’re crisp and vibrant, a primer of sorts for what was to come when the film returned to the big screen in early 1997. Add in the glossy finish and you had the most premium set of Star Wars trading cards up to that point.
Although backs do offer a bit of a story recap, they take advantage of the larger canvas and also offer other behind-the-scenes tidbits. This includes a couple of smaller images that draw from production stills, storyboards and other production materials. This adds another layer to the release that has helped it remain a standout decades later.
Ten Finest Chromium cards are the lone inserts in 1995 Topps Star Wars Widevision. Falling 1:11 packs, these take the iconic early Ralph McQuarrie designs and give them a metallic finish.

If you’re curious about how valuable 1995 Topps Star Wars Widevision is, it’s not overly expensive. For a standard base set, it’s more than a lot of others for the franchise but it’s still affordable. It’s also not rare. Topps put a big push into this set and lots appears to have been made compared to many other mid ’90s entertainment trading card sets.
Empire Strikes Back Widevision followed before 1995 came to a close and Return of the Jedi Widevision hit in 1996. The prequels would follow once they came out. Not only that, but 1995 Topps Star Wars Widevision’s success likely contributed to many other tall boy releases around this time including 1996 Upper Deck All-Time Toons and 1997 Fleer/SkyBox Batman and Robin Widevision.
