1995 Metallic Impressions Star Wars: Dark Empire trading cards represent one of the smallest releases the franchise has ever produced. As far as quality goes, it was perhaps decades ahead of its time. Today, it’s a largely forgotten release, though that doesn’t get a lot of attention.
Done as a factory box set, the checklist includes just six cards. Based on the Dark Horse comic mini-series that played an integral role in rebooting Star Wars following a lull after the original trilogy concluded, card fronts recreate the cover for each issue. Backs have an interior image along with a synopsis of what happened in the book.
The cards are very different front what you’d find in a traditional Topps Star Wars release. Each is made with metal including a steel frame. The build is similar to some modern super premium releases like Topps Star Wars Stellar Signatures. But Metallic Impressions was doing two decades earlier.
Sets came packaged in a small tin with each card inside individually pollybagged to help keep them safe.
The set has a sizeable production run of 3,000 cases, each with 24 sets. With 72,000 sets to go around, it shouldn’t be surprising that they’re still cheap and readily available today.
There are also 1,100 Dave Dorman Signature Series sets where the first card comes signed by the legendary artist.
