It was marketed as one of the biggest movies ever. Of course there was going to be trading cards. 1995 Fleer Ultra Waterworld captures the often maligned blockbuster with a quality set that, at the time, was considered premium at every point on its checklist. If nothing else, today it gives collectors holograms of Kevin Costner and Dennis Hopper.
1995 Fleer Ultra Waterworld Checklist Details
Coming in at 150 cards, the base set is a big one by movie standards. Most of that is spent recapping the movie, however there are some looks behind the scenes towards the end of the checklist.
Falling under the Fleer Ultra banner meant that the card maker was going for something more elegant and high-end. That translates into glossy base cards as well as foil for both the movie’s logo and caption on the front. This might not mean much today as the definition of premium has progressed but in 1995, this was a major selling point to try and entice collectors.
The 1995 Fleer Ultra Waterworld checklist has three levels of inserts.
Six Double Foil cards are among the most common, landing 1:4 hobby packs. These look similar to base cards with the addition of a second foil stamp — hence, Double Foil.
Prismatic Foil (six cards, 1:6 packs) take a different approach. These are printed on shiny card stock giving the entire card a certain level of glimmer.
Finally, there are Holograms. They’re not high-end holograms or even 3-D but they do evoke one of the most used trends when it comes to 1990s entertainment trading cards.
1995 Fleer Waterworld trading cards don’t carry a large amount of value today. For starters, the film lives more in infamy than it does a classic fantasy. Its greatest legacy is found at Universal Studios in the form of a theatrical show. But even the cards themselves don’t offer a huge chase. With good collation collectors should get close to a master set in a hobby box. It’s those sealed boxes that carry the most value today.
