1994 SkyBox Simpsons Series 2 is a worthy follow-up to the previous year’s stellar — if not legendary — release. That means a deep dive into Springfield’s finest and weirdest, something of a snarky tone and a handful of inserts that are simply fun.
1994 SkyBox Simpsons Series 2 Checklist Overview
Like Series 1, the base set does things a little differently. Although it’s 80 cards, it’s actually made up of four separate subsets, each with their own numbering.
Characters are half of the set. These take a deep dive into the residents of Springfield and beyond. Like the first SkyBox set, it’s one of the product’s greatest strengths largely because it goes far beyond Homer, Bart and even some of the main supporting stars. They’re all great but Mayor Quimby, Lionel Hutz and Tattoo Guy are worthy of a little trading card love as well.
Itchy and Scratchy get another 20 cards. These are done to look like title cards for cartoon shorts. Included on the backs of these and the Characters is an image of Bart that can be put together to make a flip animation.
The final 20 cards are split between Bartman and Radioactive Man.
Inserts
1994 SkyBox Simpsons Season 2 doesn’t have any of the legendary Art DeBart sketch cards that Series 1 has. That said, art is still the theme of one of the top insert sets. This time it’s four Arty Art cards. They might not have original sketches drawn directly on them, but they do have artwork from some big-name artists including Jim Valentino and Sam Keith. Landing 1:180 packs, these are extremely tough pulls.
They might not be as scarce as the Arty Art card but tracking down the Disappearing Ink cards can be a little tricky now. These are 1:36 packs, or about one per hobby box.
Ten Smell-O-Rama cards give collectors the scratch and sniff treatment. Because who doesn’t want a whiff of Marge’s hairspray or Lunch Lady Doris’ cuisine masterpiece.
Lenticular Wiggle cards return with a new batch of nine cards. One falls approximately every six packs.
Packs include a mail-away offer where collectors could buy a special tin meant to hold their cards.
Willy “The Dupe” Dipkin Promo Card
Although it has nothing to do with the set it advertises, there is one promo card for 1994 SkyBox Simpsons Series 2 that pays homage to one of the most infamous baseball cards of all-time — the 1989 Fleer Bill Ripken Fuck Face. Here, it’s Willy “The Dupe” Dipkin.
Dipkin’s bat is “Fish Face” but it’s still a nice homage that has become popular with a side range of collectors today.
The card actually has two different versions that are the same on the front but have different numbers. B1 was included in issues of Simpsons Comics #4. P4 was given out through Diamond Distribution and is significantly tougher to find. It also sells for several hundreds of dollars.
