1994 Flair Marvel Annual trading cards are another higher-end entry, joining the popular Marvel Masterpieces line. By today’s standards, it’s not an overly complex set but it’s look and approach were unique at the time. There isn’t a lot in the way of chase elements, but this is a set where, like Masterpieces, even the base cards command attention today.
1994 Flair Marvel Annual Checklist Overview
The Flair brand was a recent addition to Fleer’s portfolio, debuting with a baseball set in 1993. 1994 Flair Marvel Annual follows a lot of the same structural beats as those early baseball sets, most notably thick, glossy stock and a full-bleed sign with only small gold foil doses for the card’s caption and set logo.
Where the Marvel set diverges is with the imagery. Rather than baseball’s dual-photo approach, artwork takes Marvel artwork and runs it through the computer. The result for a lot of cards is something that has a sense of familiarity but in a new way. Today, with all the strides in digital art and technology, some of the art can look a little dated but it still stands out.
Unlike a lot of sets covering the broad Marvel universe at the time, this skips the character approach and focuses more on major events and storylines over the decades. The 1994 Flair Marvel Annual checklist has two broad sections. The first 28 cards take place in Marvel’s Silver Age with events from 1961-1968. The rest of the set moves through the Bronze Age and into the Modern Age.
Numbering Notes
The base set does have a couple of numbering quirks to keep track of. The big one is that #6 does not exist. Instead, there are two cards for the #8 spot, Iron Man and Spider-Man vs. Vulture. The Iron Man card was supposed to be #6 as noted on the set’s checklist card, but there was a mix-up.
For cards #135-149 on the 1994 Flair Marvel Annual checklist, card backs don’t have numbers. However, they too are referenced on the checklist card.
Inserts
Packs have just one insert set. One of 18 PowerBlast cards land every other pack. These carry a double-sided design, looking like a base card on the front. Backs zoom in on the image and add etched foil.
Ten FlairPrints were distributed as case toppers. These are oversized cards measuring 6 1/2″ by 10″.
