1994 Card Creations Popeye trading cards not only highlight history’s most famous cartoon sailor and his friends, but it also charts the character’s history. The set has several elements including multiple styles of inserts.
1994 Card Creations Popeye Checklist Details
It all starts with the base set. Consisting of 100 total cards, it’s broken down into four distinct subsets. The Cast of Characters covers the first quarter of the checklist, highlighting those who inhabit the Popeye-verse. From there it moves on to The World of Popeye Comics. Not only does these look at the early drawn versions of the strip, but the creators behind it as well. The World of Popeye Cartoons moves into the shorts while Popeye Situations look at the spinach eater’s interactions with other characters.
The 1994 Card Creations Popeye checklist has three insert sets available in packs as well, each using a different type of popular technology in the industry at the time.
Character Foils offers another spin on a dozen people. This time around, each card front has a small amount of gold foil highlights. At 1:9 packs, these are the easiest inserts to pull in the product.
Eight Evolution Chromes use the chromium technology that was just starting to emerge to show how the character and design of Popeye changed over the years. Collectors can expect one of these per box.
Finally, there are three Power Cels that use etched foil for a more intricate look. Falling 1:360 packs, these are extremely scarce.
Finally, there is a case topper and a tough mail-away card.
Although a strong set from a content perspective, 1994 Card Creations Popeye remains relatively affordable. Let’s face it, the character doesn’t resonate with young audiences today and Popeye is more of a legacy brand. More important here, though, is the print run. Simply put, there’s still a lot of this set out there. Prices have crept up a little over the years, but that’s bound to happen when boxes bottomed out below $10.
