1993 SkyBox Super Mario Brothers Movie trading cards are a reminder of how horribly delicious and ridiculous the film flop is.
Sure a movie about a couple of plumber brothers fighting to save the world from strange monsters doesn’t sound that promising to start with. But we’re talking about one of the most beloved and well known video game franchises of all-time. All Hollywood had to do was stick to the script.
Instead, it ended up be something more like the Masters of the Universe live-action movie where they tried to squeeze fantasy into the real world.
SkyBox’s trading cards offer up the perfect medium to showcase the horror. Spanning 100 cards, it slows things down to stills. These won’t let you forget how out of place the pairing of Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo was as the focal brothers. Or the bizarre interpretations of creatures like the Koopas and Yoshi.
Besides the base set, the only other inserts are three Holograms. Two are included in each box.
Given how poorly the film was received, it shouldn’t be surprising that the cards flopped as well. Plenty of 1993 SkyBox Super Mario Brothers Movie cards are still readily available in all forms. And low prices reflect this.
